More information
I provide a specialized aquatic experience tailored to children with diverse learning needs, including those with Autism, Down Syndrome, and neurodivergent profiles. By integrating visual supports, sensory-conscious coaching, and a patient, child-led philosophy, I transform water safety into a joyful, confidence-building journey. Whether your child is non-verbal, sensory-sensitive, or working on motor planning, I adapt my environment and teaching style to ensure they don’t just learn to swim and thrive.
1. Vital Water Safety & Self-Rescue
Safety is my number one priority. For many neurodivergent individuals, water can be a magnetic but high-risk environment. I focus on functional safety skills, such as:
- Learning "safe entry and exit" points.
- Mastering breath control and buoyancy.
- Developing self-rescue techniques tailored to your child’s physical capabilities.
2. Sensory Regulation & Nervous System Support
The water provides natural proprioceptive input (deep pressure) that can be incredibly soothing for sensory-seekers or those who feel overstimulated. In my lessons, I help students:
- Use the water to find a sense of calm and "center."
- Build tolerance for sensory inputs like splashes or ear submersion at their own pace.
- Transition from the pool to the "real world" feeling regulated and relaxed.
3. Physical Development & Motor Planning
Swimming is one of the best ways to build strength and coordination without the stress of gravity. Through my adaptive techniques, students gain:
- Improved core strength and muscle tone.
- Better motor planning (the ability to think of a movement and execute it).
- Enhanced bilateral coordination (using both sides of the body together).
4. A "Language of Success" (Communication)
I believe that being non-verbal or having a communication delay should never be a barrier to learning. I use visual schedules, hand signals, and clear, predictable routines to:
- Reduce "performance anxiety" and frustration.
- Ensure every student feels heard and understood.
- Foster a trust-based bond between me and the learner.
5. Confidence Beyond the Pool
The "I did it!" moment in the water is a powerful tool for self-esteem. When a student masters a skill they once feared, it changes how they view themselves. My students often see:
- Increased independence and willingness to try new things.
- A sense of pride in their personal progress.
- Reduced fear and anxiety in aquatic settings.
